159 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND DOLBY, John William John was born in Toronto, Ontario to Jasmin R. Dolby on April 28, 1892. Prior to World War I, John was working as a postman. On October 28, 1914 he joined the army and was assigned to the 18th Battalion. John was shipped to England on April 18, 1915 aboard the S.S. Grampian. He was hospitalized on April 30, 1916 with Chronicle Gastritis. He was shipped across the channel to France and the front lines. By May 11, 1917 he was in the Battle of Vimy Ridge with the 4th Canadian Machine Gun Co. and when charging forward he fell into a shell hole, severely damaged his left leg. With no improvement, John was moved back to England to Birmingham War Hospital. At that time, he met Agnes Matilda and they married. He was sent to Bearwood Convalescent Hospital, where the finding of the board determined that “the swelling of the left leg and groin is greatly aggravated by the wearing of puttees”. Cpl Dolby was assigned to light duty in England until his discharge on February 20, 1919. John passed away in 1981 and is buried in Parkview Cemetery, Waterloo, Ontario. DONALD, Harvey Gladstone Harvey was born on January 30, 1894 in Bosanquet Township, near Thedford, Ontario. He enlisted in the Army on April 20, 1918 and served with the 1st Depot Battalion, 1st Tank Battalion in Canada and in England during World War I. He sailed on SS Hampton returning from Buxton, Derbyshire, England on October 22, 1919. Harvey was discharged on November 11, 1919, returning to the farm. He later moved to Eugene, Oregon, USA. DOMONCHUK, George Metro George was born in Preston, Ontario on October 15, 1915 to Michael and Mary along with Joe, Stan, Helen, Harry, Pete, John, Frank, Paul, and Marilyn. He went to high school in Preston. In 1942, he joined the military as volunteer and posted in Edmonton, Alberta to guard Japanese prisoners during World War II. A joint venture with American Forces known as “code name Cottage”; George was a member of the Canadian 13th Infantry Mountain Brigade which onAugust 15, 1943 came ashore in Kiska of the Aleutian Island. In 1944, he signed up with the Regular Army and was sent to England. He was discharged in February 1946. George married Anita (Vogel) and they raised three children: Doug, Susan, and Karen. He worked at shoe material sales and eventually became supervisor with Wrage Shoe in Preston. George was a member of the Knights of Columbus and an active member of The Royal Canadian Legion Preston Branch 126 with over 25 years of membership. He lived all his life in Preston. George passed away on August 20, 1998 and is buried in the Park Lawn Cemetery in Preston.
