173 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND DURR, George Melvin George was born on October 22, 1894 in West McGillivray Township, Parkhill, Ontario, the son of James and Martha Durr. George was a student and belonged to the Cadet Corp. He enlisted in the Army on January 7, 1916 in Parkhill, Ontario and arrived in England in August 1916, joining the 75th Battalion. He sailed on the SS Olympic and served in France and Belgium in May 1917. He was wounded at Cambrai and was evacuated back to England. In September 1918, George’s ring finger was amputated, and he had partial function of the left hand. He left for Canada on November 11, 1918 and was discharged in July 1919. George passed away in 1975 and is buried at the Parkhill Cemetery in Ontario. EAGLE, Harold Martin Harold was born in Hespeler, Ontario on January 20, 1899 to James and Elizabeth (Hodgson) Eagle along with Pearl, George, James, and Carl. Harold joined the army in Guelph, Ontario on March 13, 1917 and trained with the O.C. 64th Depot Battery C.F.A. He left Canada on May 28 and arrived at Shorncliffe, England on June 23, 1917 to serve in World War I. More training was given and then he was sent to France on February 4, 1918 and transferred to the 14th Brigade Canadian Field Artillery. Harold did have minor dermatitis all his life but due to field conditions in the trenches, he was not able to apply proper treatment and therefore was infected. He was sent back to England and was discharged on January 27, 1919. Harold married Florence Annie (Burr) and settled in Preston where they raised their four children: Douglas, Marilyn, Doreen, and Verne. The family then moved to Hamilton where Harold found employment in carpentry and contract work. He joined The Royal Canadian Legion Burlington Branch 60, where he spent many years on the executive including President. Harold passed away on October 5, 1973 in Burlington, Ontario and is buried in Preston Cemetery in Cambridge, Ontario. DUSOME, Jack Jack was born in Penetanguishene, Ontario, on November 19, 1891. On April 7, 1916, he enlisted in Penetanguishene with the Canadian Expeditionary Force to serve inWorldWar I. He was 25 years old and single. He listed his trade as labourer and had no previous military experience. Private Dusome sailed on the SS Cameronia to arrive in England on October 28, 1916. After getting some training in England, he landed in France on February 11, 1917, assigned to the 116th Canadian Infantry Battalion, part of the 3rd Canadian Division. Private Dusome served on the front lines with that unit until he was wounded on October 30, 1917, at the Battle of Passchendaele. He was repatriated to Canada and discharged on April 9, 1919. Jack passed away on December 19, 1934.
