175 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND EAGLE, Herbert Alfred “Herb” Herb was born in Hespeler, Ontario on August 19, 1912 to Rueben and Mary Ann (Schaefer) along with Alma, Harvey, Edna, Violet, Arthur, Ruby, Anna Mary, and Roy. Prior to World War II, Herb worked at Dominion Rubber Co. in Kitchener. On October 14, 1940, at age 28, Herb joined the Army and was assigned to the #11 Coy Canadian Provost Corps. He was stationed at various bases in Canada and eventually discharged on September 28, 1945 with the rank of Sergeant. He was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, War Medal 1939-1945. Upon his return to Kitchener, he resumed working at Dominion Rubber in the tire division as a mechanic. Herb married Sadie (Gehl) and they raised two children, Ronald, and Judith. He joined The Royal Canadian Legion and enjoyed many occasions with his comrades at the legion. Herb passed away on December 7, 1997 and his name has been inscribed on plaque #5 of the Waterloo Legion Veterans Memorial Wall. EDMUNDS, Erland Erland was born in Thedford, Ontario on November 5, 1894. He was employed as a farrier and blacksmith in the village. He enlisted in the Army on January 5, 1916, joining the 149th Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force to serve in World War I. His unit sailed from Halifax on March 23, 1917 and arrived in Liverpool on April 7, 1917. He transferred from Bramshott to Witley in February 1918. His unit arrived for reinforcement in France in March 1918. Erland was discharged on July 12, 1919. EBERLY, Albert Edward Albert was born on January 24, 1895 in Parkhill, Ontario. He was adopted by Charles and Elizabeth Cathers and the family moved to Sarnia, Ontario. Albert enlisted in the Army on January 9, 1918. He had experience with the 136th Reg Edmonton Militia. He joined the Canadian InfantryWestern Ontario Regiment and sailed on the SS Grampian in February 1918. Albert served in France in June 1918 in battle near Arras. He was severely wounded in the back and left leg and died of his wounds the next day on September 3, 1918. Albert is buried at Aubigny Communal Cemetery Nord Pas-de-Calais France.
