189 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND ELLISTON, Scott Randall Scott was born on January 14, 1969 in Iserlohn, Germany. He was in Army Cadets 1390 in Red Deer, Alberta and 1726 in Comox, British Columbia. He also served in Infantry Reserves from 1986 to 1987. Scott joined the Regular Force in July 1987 with the Royal Canadian Dragoons and served until 1993. He completed a peacekeeping tour in Cyprus in 1989 and served with Airborne Battle Group from 1990 to 1992. Scott re-mustered to the Navy in 1993 serving on the HMCS Annapolis and HMCS Vancouver between 1993 and 2001 as an Electrician and Ships Team Diver. Scott was selected as Search & Rescue Technician in 2001. He served as SAR Tech 2 with 103 Squadron in Gander, Newfoundland, 442 Squadron in Comox, British Columbia, and RCSU(P) in Victoria, British Columbia, 413 Squadron in Greenwood, Nova Scotia and presently with 103 Squadron in Gander, Newfoundland. As SAR Tech, he was inducted as a Member of the Order of Military Merit in 2008 and received the Cormorant Trophy & Aviation Week Laureate (Operations), Air Command Commendation (2006), 1 Canadian Air Division Commander’s Commendation (2006) and Letter of Recognition from the Prime Minister of Canada (2007). EMSLIE, James David James was born in Brantford, Ontario on November 8, 1919 to Charles and Alice Pearl (McNeil) Emslie along with Malcolm, Ken, and John. James went to public school in West Montrose and high school at Brantford Central. He lied about his age and joined the army in 1948 with the Royal Canadian Engineers and after basic training he transferred to the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry Airborne. James lists as joyful things done while in the service (jumping) and special thing (being posted in Alaska). He received his honourable discharge in 1951. James became a truck driver with J.M. Schneider’s Meat for 38 years and during that time he married Fern Ellen (Steppler) and they raised four children: Steven, Michael, James, and Cindy. After taking his retirement, James and Fern moved into Trinity Retirement Village. Fern passed away on December 24, 2019. He is kept busy and active, enjoying his 67 continuous years of membership with The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 530 in Waterloo along with his two sons, Steve and James, and five grandchildren, Alex, Nick, Ben, Ken and James 3rd who all are Associate members of Waterloo Legion. EMSLIE, Charles Charles was born in Hespeler, Ontario on February 2, 1882. He had one sister, Catherine, and one brother, Donald. Charles was working for the Guelph Railway as a motor man on the streetcars when he was sent to Valcartier, Ontario for training to go overseas. When in France, he was attached to the 16th Battery, 3rd Infantry Battalion. In battle, he was severely injured from shrapnel with major damage to the left side of his head and eye and his right hand. He also suffered from shell shock as a result of this event. Charles was shipped back to England and posted to CASC for rehabilitation. After many months of test, it was ultimately determined that he was medically unfit to perform regular military duties. He was shipped back to Canada and discharged on December 21, 1917. Charles marriedAlice Pearl (McNeil)and they had four boys: Malcolm, James, Ken, and John. Charles was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Brantford Branch 90. Charles worked in a sporting goods store in Brantford until his passing on January 21, 1941 and is buried in Mount Hope Cemetery in Brantford, Ontario.
