197 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND FAIRBARN, Clifford Ernest Clifford was born on May 27, 1918 in Queensville, Ontario to Ernest and Lavina Fairbarn and was a husband to Birdie Fairbarn. He enlisted in the Army in 1939 and served with the Royal Canadian Artillery, his rank was L/Bombardier. Clifford was killed in action in Italy on December 14, 1943 buried in Moro River Cemetery in Italy. FERGUSON, John Alexander John was born in Armstrong Mills, Ontario north of Guelph on September 1, 1894. He was a resident of Berlin (Kitchener), Ontario when he enrolled in the Canadian Expeditionary Force on February 10, 1915, listing his occupation as a labourer. He sailed to England from Montreal on the SS Hesperian. On October 30, 1917, he was a member of the 5th Canadian Mounted Rifles Battalion when he was shot in the head by a sniper as he prepared to go over the top at Passchendaele. John served in Canada, England, France, and Belgium during World War I. He was 23 years old and has no known grave. Instead, he is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin) Gate, Panel 30, 32 along with the names of more than 54,000 soldiers who died in Belgium and have no know grave. John was the son of Mrs. Olive Ferguson. FAWCETT, Allison C. “Al” Al was born on March 10, 1919 in Arcola, Saskatchewan and was raised in Rainey River, Ontario. He enlisted with the 2nd Battalion, Lake Superior Regiment NPAM in Thunder Bay Ontario on October 9, 1940. After training in Winnipeg, he was deployed overseas in July 1941 and served as an Army gunner and surveyor fighting in Italy, Belgium, France, and the Netherlands. After receiving his discharge with the rank of Sergeant on February 15, 1946, he returned to Thunder Bay where he attained his Funeral Directors License. Together with his wife Margaret (Howe), a registered nurse, they established a funeral service in Geraldton from 1952 to 1958 after which time they moved to Flesherton, Ontario purchasing the local funeral service there. Al and Marg had three children and eight grandchildren at the time of Al’s passing on June 2, 1990 at the age of 72. Among his many achievements, Al was Reeve of Flesherton from 1962 to 1988 and served on Grey County Council. He was an active member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 333 in Flesherton, Ontario for 32 years.
