51 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND BATES, Ethan Murray Ethan was born in Thedford, Ontario on May 10, 1892. He enlisted in the Army on September 27, 1915 with the 70th Battalion to serve in World War I. He transferred to the 39th Battalion and sailed to England on the SS Lapland on April 24, 1916 arriving in May 1916. He was sent to France on September 11, 1916. Ethan was wounded on November 5, 1916, again in Boulogne and was in hospital on August 1, 1917. He returned to Canada on March 8, 1919 and was discharged on March 19, 1919. Ethan was awarded the War Service Badge. BEAN, Bradley Arthur Bradley was born inn 1952 in Brampton, Ontario. He joined the Lorne Scots on May 8, 1968. In 1974, he became an Assault Pioneer and was also part of the winning 1980 CMA/ORA Team winning the CF Pairs Sniper Rifle Competition. In May 1998, he was promoted to CWO and appointed RSM of the Lorne Scots. CWO Bean took his commission on December 7, 2002 and was appointed Officer Commanding A Coy in Oakville. In 2005, he became a Civil Military Cooperation Operator and deployed to support First Nations disaster relief in northern Ontario. In March 2007, he became a Senior Watchkeeper during the War in Afghanistan for LFCA. In May 2010, he was presented with a third clasp to his Canadian Forces’ Decoration. Captain Bean retired from the CF on November 19, 2012. He also retired from McDonnell Douglas/Boeing after more than thirty years of service. Bradley has been residing in Bobcaygeon, Ontario since July 2018. He is a member of The Major W. Dwight Sharpe branch 15 in Brampton and The Royal Canadian Legion Bobcaygeon branch 239 for a total of 47 years. BATES, Mildred Sophia Mildred was born inArkona, Bosanquet Township, Ontario on December 26, 1890. She enlisted in the Army on August 26, 1916 and joined the 22nd Expeditionary Force Medical Corps as a Nursing Sister. She served in England and in France during World War I. She arrived in England on April 7, 1917 and was sick with influenza in 1918. Mildred returned to Canada on the SS Lapland onApril 3, 1919. She married in Forest, Ontario in 1927. Mildred passed away on December 20, 1974. Her brother, Ethan Bates, also served in the Army.
