59 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND BELL, Joseph Raymond Joseph was born in Toronto, Ontario on September 7, 1932. He was eighteen years old when he enlisted in the Canadian Army in Toronto on February 15, 1951 and posted with the Manitoba Dragoons. He spent most of the next two years training at the base in Petawawa, Ontario. He was sent overseas to Korea in April 1953 and was badly wounded about a month later. Joseph died on June 6, 1953. He is buried in the United Nations cemetery located in Tanggok a suburb of Busan, South Korea. In June 1988, his mother Caroline Bell was presented with the Korean Ambassador of Peace Medal. This was the first time ever in Canada. A cross with the name of Trooper Joseph Bell is in the War Memorial section of the Stouffville, Ontario Cemetery. His mother was a Silver Cross Mother. BENDER, Earl Alvin Earl was born in Port Colborne on July 17, 1925. He signed up in the Merchant Navy just before he was eighteen years old, on May 6, 1943. He wanted to help protect his country. Earl served on the High Seas on HMCS Star, HMCS Stadacona and HMCS Cornwallis during World War II. He was killed in service on March 26, 1944 on HMCS Star. BELL, William H. “Hank” William was born in Windsor, Ontario on August 23, 1925. He enlisted in the Merchant Navy in 1944. Upon discharge in 1946, he married Catherine and was employed as a welder for WGT in Hensall. He became a Life Member of The Royal Canadian Legion Hensall Branch 468 in 1944 after serving on the Legion’s executive and Colour Party. His welding skills saved the Legion a lot of money during renovations. William passed away on May 9, 2002.
