63 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND BESSERER, Gordon Rene Gordon was born in Orleans, Ontario on November 17, 1923. He enlisted on May 30, 1941 and served in the Canadian Army. His discharge papers stated that he was physically unfit one year after enlistment. He was discharged in June 1942. One year later, he enlisted in the Merchant Navy. Gordon served on two ships, one out of Montreal, the Whiteshell Park, and one out of Saint John, New Brunswick, the Crystal Park. His papers stated that he was a seaman, greaser, and donkeyman. He served from April 1944 to his discharge in June 1945. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 503 in Levack, Ontario. Gordon passed away on May 16, 1973. BEWLEY, Walter Clarence Walter was born on June 27, 1920 in Huron County. He enlisted in the Army on April 9, 1942, serving with the Essex Scottish Unit in Germany and the Netherlands during World War II. Walter served 26 months in Canada and eleven months in the United Kingdom and Northwest Europe. He was promoted from Private to Corporal in June 1945 and participated in the Liberation of Holland. His specialty was the 3-inch mortar and he was also qualified as a Class III Driver, wheeled and track. After his discharge, on January 23, 1946, he farmed in Huron County until his retirement in 1975. He married his wife Jean and had two daughters, Mary and Brenda. Walter was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion in Brussels, Ontario for over 35 years and he passed away on February 28, 1983. BESSERER, Sam Daniel Sam was born on December 4, 1948 in Eastview, Ontario. He enlisted in 1967 with the Royal Canadian Navy and served as an Able Seaman on HMCS Bonaventure on the High Seas. He did Air Boatswain Technical Training and Fire Fighter Basic. Sam was discharged in 1969. He is a 49-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 503.
