71 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND BOLAND, Joseph Patrick Joseph was born on January 11, 1921 in Ailsa Craig, Ontario, the son of John and Mary Boland. He was a farmer when he enlisted in the Army on July 16, 1942. He joined the Essex Scottish Regiment Canadian Infantry Corp, arriving in England. Joseph was in France on July 6, 1944 and a few weeks later, on July 29, 1944, he was killed in action. He is buried at Bretteville-sur-Laize, France. His name is marked on a stone at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Cemetery near Parkhill, Ontario. Joseph received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal in 1943. BORTHWICK, Stephen Alexander Stephen was born in Bosanquet Township, Ontario on August 18, 1889. He joined the Canadian Infantry, Alberta Regiment, Division 31st Battalion to serve in World War I. He was wounded by shrapnel in the leg and the arm in Passchendaele. He started to walk from the dressing station but had only reached his battalion assembled preparatory to the attack when he was wounded again and died shortly afterwards. Stephen is buried at Menin Gate Memorial inYpres, Belgium. He died on November 6, 1917 and his name in inscribed on the Thedford Cenotaph. BONNELL, Charles Ernest Charles was born in Toronto, Ontario on August 14, 1909. He took his education at Lakefield Preparatory College School in Peterborough, Ontario, class of 1925. He then enlisted in the Navy on October 2, 1939 and served with the Royal Canadian Navy Volunteer Reserve as a Lieutenant. He served on numerous ships over the course of his service, including HMCS Stone Frigate, HMCS Stadacona, HMCS Ambler, HMS King Alfred, HMS California, HMS Osprey, HMS Hornet, HMS Beehive, HM MTB 46, HM MTB 218, HMS Dolphin, HMS Titania, and HMS P311. He was reported missing in action in 1943 when the submarine he was on, HMS P311, was sunk. He was presumed deceased on January 8, 1943. His wife passed away shortly after. He received the 1939-1945 Star, Atlantic Star, Defence Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, War Medal 19391945 and his widow received the Memorial Cross.
