85 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND BROOKS, John John was born in Stockton, Durham County, England on September 2, 1896. He came to Canada in 1908 and worked on a farm in West Williams Township for the John Morakey family. John enlisted in the Army on December 11, 1915 in Parkhill, Ontario he joined the 135th Battalion. He served in England and, due to his health issues and being kicked by a horse, worked at camp until his discharge in June 1918. He returned to Canada and passed away on November 24, 1928 in Sudbury, Ontario. BROUGHTON, Normal Goodwin Norman was born on March 19, 1898 in Erin Township, Ontario. He enlisted for the Canadian Expeditionary Force at Erin, Ontario on October 3, 1915. Norman trained with the 71st Battalion at London, Ontario where they slept on the ground, six to a tent. Norman embarked with the battalion from Halifax on April 1, 1916, aboard the RMS Olympic. After disembarking at Liverpool, they went by train to their destination at Bramshott, marching the last three miles into the camp where they received a dry slice of bread, a bowl of tea and went to bed. In June 1916, Norman was transferred to the 87th Battalion and disembarked in France on August 18, 1916. The Battalion was part of the 4th Canadian Division during the Battle of the Somme. Norman was killed in action at the age of eighteen on October 21, 1916 in the Regina Trench in Courcelette, France and is buried in the Adanac Military Cemetery near where he fell. His comrades placed an inscription on the wooden cross over him. BROOKS, William Spencer “Billie” Billie was born on March 6, 1896, in Wilby, Northamptonshire, England. Billie and his parents, Fred and Mary Brooks, came to the Arkona area in May 1914 to farm. He enlisted in the Army on January 16, 1916 in Arkona, Ontario with the 149th Battalion. His unit sailed to England on SS Lapland in March 1917. Billie served in France in August 1917 and was wounded twice in May and October 1918. He spent three months in hospital. Billie was discharged in May 1919 and he decided to stay in England. Billie passed away on July 4, 1977 and buried in Northamptonshire, England.
