87 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND BROWN, Douglas Gordon “Doug” Doug was born in Toronto, Ontario on November 24, 1926. He enlisted in the Navy on July 1, 1944 at the age of seventeen. He served in Canada with the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve. He was discharged on July 16, 1945 after his unit was demobilized. At the time of discharge, he was an ordinary seaman. He was with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Doug and his wife raised five children. After retiring, Doug kept busy doing deliveries then later drove a cab. He was a ten-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 143. Doug passed away in March 1979. BROWN, Leslie Stuart Leslie was born on July 10, 1911 in Newmarket, Ontario. In 1942, Leslie enlisted with the Navy serving with the Merchant Navy on HMS Loch Alvie in England. He was discharged in 1945 and received the War Medal and Clasp. After leaving the service, he took a construction job and met and married Gloria Loughran. They had ten children and raised them on Cawthra Boulevard in Newmarket. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Milton Wesley Branch 426. Leslie passed away on November 11, 1984. BROWN, Henry Henry, also known as Harry, was the son of James and Agnes Brown, was born in Belfast, Ireland on April 10, 1913. He resided in Hamilton, Ontario prior to enlisting in the Army. He enlisted on September 16, 1939 and served with the 5th Canadian Field Ambulance, RCAMS and was part of the 1st Canadian Infantry Brigade. Harry was killed on August 3, 1943, presumably at the battle for Regalbuto, Sicily. He is buried at the Canadian War Cemetery in Agira, Sicily, B/F/205. He left behind his wife Evelyn Mae Brown. His tombstone reads: “Higher No Man Can Aspire, More He Cannot Give.”
