95 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND BURKINSHAW, Robert William Robert was born on June 9, 1943 in Windsor, Ontario. In 1961, he enlisted with the Navy serving with the HMCS Haida, HMCS Nootka, HMCS Buckingham, and the HMCS Victoriaville in Canada. Robert said he joined the Navy to make a career and to meet his wife realizing the Navy and marriage were incompatible. He was discharged in 1964 and became a welder until his retirement. Robert is a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Riverside Branch 255. BURLING, Carl Carl was born on September 1, 1916 in Lloydtown, Ontario. On January 12, 1942, he enlisted with the Army during World War II serving with the 1st Hussars Regiment in Canada and in the United Kingdom. He received the Defence Medal, War Medal 1939-1945 and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. He was discharged on September 27, 1946. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Col. Fred Tilston VC, Branch 385, in Aurora, Ontario. Carl passed away on August 22, 1999. BURLEY, Owen “William” William was born on June 17, 1889 in Port Franks, Bosanquet Township, Ontario. He enlisted in the Army on April 28, 1916, joining the 149th Battalion, 25th Reserve Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force at Camp Borden. He was hospitalized for influenza. His unit sailed on SS Lapland in April 1917, arriving in Liverpool in May 1917. He served in England and in France during World War I. William returned to Canada on May 3, 1919 on the RMS Scotian.
