111 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND COUTU, Gérald W. Gérald was born in Montreal, Quebec on January 25, 1918. He joined the Army on February 4, 1942 and served with the Canadian Grenadier Guards in Canada, England and Northwest Europe until his discharge on March 12, 1946. He was awarded the 1939-45 Star, the France and Germany Star, the Defence Medal and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp. He returned to Wawa and worked as Supervisor at Algoma Ore Properties. Gérald was a member of Wawa Legion Branch 429 for 58 years before he passed away on November 14, 2003. COX, James N. James was born in Erieau, Ontario onApril 19, 1920. He joined the Canadian Navy in 1944 and served on HMCS Stadacona, Hamilton and Bittersweet as a Stoker. He received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, the 1939-1945 Star, the Atlantic Star and one other medal which he can’t identify. He sailed on the Great Lakes onboard freighters for 25 years, ultimately becoming a marine engineer. On March 21, 2006, he passed away due to kidney failure after living his final five years at Parkwood Hospital in London, Ontario. He was a member of Blenheim Legion Branch 185 for 62 years. COWELL, Vernon Leslie “Les” Les was born on November 11, 1920, in Ottawa, Ontario. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force (Regular) on September 9, 1941, and reported to the No. 2 Manning Depot in Brandon, Manitoba for initial training. He received his qualifications for Wireless Operator in November 1942 and was subsequently qualified for Air Gunner duties in December 1942. He graduated from Operational Training in Nassau, Bahamas in June 1943 and was then posted overseas to RCAF No. 407 “Canadian Demon Squadron” in Chivenor, North Devon, England. Vernon flew a total of 664 hours primarily on anti-submarine patrol over the English Channel. He was discharged in 1946. Following the war, Vernon returned to Ottawa with his English war bride and raised two lovely daughters. He was a Dominion Customs Appraiser with Canada Customs until his retirement. Vernon was a longterm member of The Royal Canadian Legion Westboro Branch and passed away on December 8, 2000.
