115 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND CROSS, Edward Walter “Ted” Ted was born in Belleville, Ontario on January 18, 1943. In February 1957, he enlisted in the 59 Light Anti-Aircraft, Lanark and Renfrew Scottish Reserve, serving until December 1958. On February 29, 1960, he entered basic training at Camp Borden and joined the regular forces Royal Canadian Armoured Corps until 1963. He was badged into Lord Strathcona’s Horse Royal Canadian, which was then located in Calgary, Alberta. Ted’s service included a posting to defence chemical laboratories where he tested new ordnances under consideration by the Canadian Armed Forces. He found this posting to be very educational and rewarding. Trooper Cross was discharged on March 26, 1963. He has been a member of numerous branches of The Royal Canadian Legion over the years and is currently a member of Dr. Fred Starr Branch 76 in Sudbury. He has been residing in Sudbury since May 2010. CUSHMAN, Ross Donald Ross was born on May 2, 1921, in Turnerville, Ontario. As a 21-year-old Cadet on the Chatham Police Force, he was granted leave of absence in July 1942 to join the RCAF where he spent 37 months, including 18 months with 419 Moose Squadron. Flight Officer Cushman flew 17 operational missions in Lancaster bombers and made three trips to bomb Hamburg, as well as ‘Ops’ to Leipzig, Dresden, Kiel andWageroose. His plane was badly shot up over Hagan in the Ruhr Valley of Germany but Ross managed to get it back to base and land without incident. He married Catherine Smith of Chatham, Ontario on February 5, 1944 and was discharged in September 1945. Between September 15, 1945 and his retirement in 1985, he served with the Chatham Police Force, was Chief of Police in Wallaceburg, Ontario and Sheriff of Kent County. Ross and Catherine had three children and he was a member of Wallaceburg Legion Branch 18 until he passed away on April 2, 1993, at the age of 71. CROUCH, Richard Edmund “Rick” Rick was born on February 28, 1942 in London, England and immigrated to Canada with his parents on August 26, 1947. He joined the RCAF Reserve in Toronto on May 4, 1961 and transferred to RCAF Regular Force on January 17, 1962. He took basic training at RCAF Station in St. Jean, Quebec and electronic training at RCAF Station in Clinton, Ontario as Radar Ground Technician. He was stationed at RCAF Radar Stations Falconbridge, Moosonee, Ontario; Penhold, Alberta and Pagwa, Ontario. In August 1963, he was stationed at RCAF Station North Bay, Ontario, NORAD Canada Headquarters. He was discharged on January 16, 1967. Rick worked for IBM servicing computers from 1967 to 1985. He was married to Minnie (Buttinger) from February 1968 until her passing in July 2007. He moved to Mt Brydges, Ontario in 1986. He was working with other computer maintenance companies in Southwestern Ontario between 1986 and 2002. He joined the Canadian Corps of Commissionaires on June 8, 2002 and worked security at the London, Ontario Airport until October 19, 2008. He moved to Orillia, Ontario in October 2008 and transferred to Commissionaires Great Lakes and worked security in Barrie, Ontario and area. Rick retired on October 30, 2010. He is a six-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Orillia Branch 34.
