123 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND DAVIS, Matthew J. Matthew was born on March 2, 1845, in Stoneham, Quebec. He joined the Army and served in the Durham Infantry Company, Volunteer Militia. He participated in the Fenian Raid in 1866 in the Hamilton area and also served with No. 4 Company, 31st Battalion under Captain W. A. Anderson. Matthew passed away on March 19, 1914. DEAN, Roy Roy was born in Tobermory, Ontario on April 19, 1896. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) on April 1, 1918 and served with 78th Battalion until his discharge on February 28, 1919. Roy passed away on April 22, 1966. DAWE, John Howard John was born in Grimsby, Ontario on September 17, 1898. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) on January 17, 1916. He served with the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force, 98th Battalion, 58th Battalion in England and in France. On December 20, 1916, at Vimy Ridge, he was dangerously wounded in the abdomen, left hip, right elbow, and right lung. His character was awarded in accordance with King’s regulations for being honest and conscientious. He was discharged on January 15, 1918. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 612. John passed away on January 16, 1993.
