129 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND DINGWELL, Herbert George Herbert was born in Corner Brook, Newfoundland, on September 8, 1945. He enlisted in the Army Regular Force in August 1964 and served with the RCR in Germany during the Cold War. He was discharged in March 1969. As of 2021, Herbert resides in Golden Lake, Ontario. DOAN, Dorothy E. Dorothy was born on July 18, 1915 in Komoka. She enlisted on April 26, 1942 and attained the rank of Captain as a Nursing Sister. After three weeks in England, her group of nurses left on July 1, 1942 for South Africa where Dorothy served with the South African Military Nursing Service. She proceeded to Egypt and Italy then returned to Canada where she was honourably discharged on June 10, 1946. Dorothy was awarded the 1939-1945 Star, the Italy Star, the Defence Medal, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp, the King George V Medal, the Africa Medal, the Queen’s Silver Jubilee Medal and Canada’s 125th Anniversary Medal. Dorothy continued to serve her community of Strathroy in many ways. She was awarded the Strathroy Citizen of theYear in 1992 and was a Life Member and recipient of the Meritorious Service Medal from Sir Arthur Currie Legion Branch 116. Dorothy was a member of The Legion for 38 years before she passed away on June 10, 2006. DINSMORE, Norman R. “Bob” Bob was born on August 5, 1917, in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. He joined the Royal Canadian Navy in 1941 and was stationed in Halifax, assigned to the HMCS Ungava, serving in the Atlantic and Pacific. After his discharge in 1945, Bob wanted to re-enlist but that meant serving six months at sea in a submarine. He left the Navy and returned to Sault Ste. Marie where he was hired at Algoma steel and worked there until he retired in 1970. The family did a lot of traveling and spent their summers at their cottage east of Sault Ste. Marie. Norman was a member of Sault Ste. Marie Legion Branch 25 for 46 years before he passed away on March 1, 1994.
