139 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND DUNLOP, John Arkle Arkle was born on June 16, 1917 in Moonstone, Ontario. He enlisted in 1942 with the Lincoln and Welland Regiment and served in Canada, England, France, Belgium, Holland, and Germany. He was wounded three times. Major Dunlop was discharged in 1946, was mentioned in dispatches and was awarded the Croix de Guerre with Gold Star for valour (France). After the war, Arkle kept in touch with many friends he had made in Europe, making visits to some of the battlefields such as St. Lambert sur Dives, Kapelsche Veer and Delden where Arkle’s company had crossed the 20th Canal in boats, attacked and held some farm buildings in a fierce battle that ended when he called the Artillery down on his own position. The liberation of Delden became a springboard for the final assault into Germany. Arkle was a lawyer with the firm of Harris & Dunlop in Markdale. He was a member of Flesherton Legion Branch 333 before he passed away on April 30, 2008. EDGAR, Alexander James Alexander was born in Toronto, Ontario on January 5, 1921. His family moved to Warkworth where he joined the Army in 1939. He served in England, France, Holland and Germany with the 2nd Field Battalion, Canadian Army, 4th Field Regiment. He was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and the France and Germany Star. His three brothers, Harold, Robert and Doug, also served in World War II. Alex was a member of Warkworth, Geraldton and Powassan Legion Branches for more than 15 years before he passed away on July 9, 2004. DUNLOP, Robert D. Robert was born on February 12, 1921, in Bruce County, Ontario. He joined the Army on July 2, 1940 and served in England, Italy, Sicily and Germany with the Three Rivers Regiment, 12th Canadian Army Tank Battalion. He was wounded when his tank was hit in Italy and he later marched in Germany’s Black Forest in at the end of the war. He was discharged on October 12, 1945. Robert was a member of MacDonald Legion Branch 183 and Major William Dwight Sharpe Legion Branch 15 for approximately 20 years before he passed away on October 10, 1965.
