145 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND EVERS, Roy S. Roy was born on October 3, 1921, in Neustadt, Ontario. He enlisted in the Army on April 21, 1943 and served with the 11th Canadian Infantry Brigade, Unit 50 Division in Canada, England, Italy, France and Germany. He was awarded the 1939-1945 Star, the Italy Star, the France and Germany Star, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp and the War Medal 1939-1945. He was discharged on February 23, 1946. After the war, Roy worked for the Simmons Furniture Factory in Elora for 22 years and was a member of Elora Legion Branch 229 for 51 years. Roy passed away on June 9, 2000. FABIAN, Alex Alex was born in Romania on September 16, 1961 and immigrated to Canada in 1987. Fifteen years later, after receiving his Canadian Citizenship Certificate, he enrolled in the Canadian Armed Forces on December 18, 2007. Basic training was in St-Jean, Quebec from January to March 2003, followed by occupation training as a Mobile Support Equipment Operator (MSE Op) at CFB Borden, Ontario. During his sixteen-year career, he was posted to CFB Borden, Petawawa, and Ottawa. In 2007, Master Corporal Fabian was selected to be a member of the Canadian Special Operations Regiment. He describes the four and a half years he spent at CSOR as the best part of his military career. During that period, he participated in numerous exercises and deployments including Afghanistan. Alex left the CAF on June 19, 2018, having earned the General Campaign Star for service in Afghanistan; the Special Service Medal for Operation Reassurance; and the Canadian Forces Decoration for twelve years of service with the CAF. Alex is currently a three-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Coldwater Branch 270. He resided in Warminster, Ontario from 2020 to 2022. EYRE, Samuel A. “Sam” Sam was born in England on March 13, 1880. He enlisted in 1898 and was a dispatch rider during the Boer War. He could ride a horse on its side so the enemy would think the horse was just a runaway. He suffered a wound close to his eye and was awarded the Queen Victoria Medal. After his discharge in 1901, he joined the circus and was in charge of the elephants. Later, he was headlined on trapeze as the catch-man and was also a tightrope champion in Canada at the Canadian National Exhibition. Sam also served in World War I from 1914 to 1918 and in World War II from 1939 to 1945 in Canada, Africa and on the high seas. Sam was a Company Sergeant Major with the Queen’s Own Rifles. He was a member of Port Perry Legion Branch 419 for fifteen years before he passed away on November 15, 1972.
