157 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND FUTIA, Gregory “Charles” Charles was born in Montreal on January 10, 1911. He served with the Royal Canadian Air Force (Regular Force) during World War II in Canada. He was employed in various roles throughout his civilian life, initially as a Pipe Fitter followed by labourer, store clerk and store owner. Charles was the proud father of one daughter, Bonnie, and a grand-daughter, Brenda. He was also the stepfather of one son, two daughters and eleven grandchildren. He passed away at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Sarnia on May 28, 1982 and is buried at Our Lady of Mercy Cemetery in Sarnia, Ontario. Charles has no record of being a member of The Royal Canadian Legion, but he kept in his possession an interesting ‘coded entry card’ for Branch 62, Salmon Arm, BC (Note: Sarnia Legion is Branch #62 as well). GALLANT, Alyre Joseph Alyre was born on December 23, 1922, in Piusville, PEI, the third oldest of ten children. He enlisted in the Army on April 18, 1941 and trained at Camp Borden, Ontario. He was then moved to Debert, Nova Scotia and from there was shipped to England. While there he met his future bride, Margaret Whelan. He was assigned to the Sherbrooke Fusiliers, Tank 4. His troop stormed Normandy then proceeded North to liberate Holland. He volunteered to fight in Japan and while on leave at home on PEI, the war ended. Alyre was discharged on October 15, 1945. In 1947, he married Margaret, and after living on PEI for one year they moved to Toronto where they raised their five children. After retiring he became an even more active member in his church community, becoming a Grand Knight of Columbus and a long-time volunteer of the St. Vincent de Paul Society. Alyre was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 344 for 35 years. Alyre passed away on May 12, 2020. His life was one of service to his family, his country, and his community. He was always very proud to be decorated World War II veteran. GALE, James Robert James was born in Port Colborne, Ontario on January 20, 1945. He enlisted in the Air Force on August 28, 1964 as a peacekeeper and served with 2CFFTS, 441 Squadron, 427 Squadron, UNTSO and MFO in Canada, Germany, Israel, Lebanon, Syria and Egypt. James was discharged on January 20, 2000.
