He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1940 and served in Canada until his discharge in 1944. Williams’s family has the letters that he sent to his wife during his training. He sent one letter every day he was away, describing life in the Air Force. He trained to be a navigator and learned to navigate by the Stars at night during blackouts. Returning to civilian life, he carried on in the Gammage Flower business which is still operating today in London after 100 years in business. William passed away on May 26, 1998. GARDINER, Lloyd Gerald Lloyd was born on October 16, 1920, in Richards Landing, Ontario, the son of Louis and Azilda Gardiner on St. Joseph Island east of Sault Ste. Marie in northern Ontario. In 1932, the family moved to Sault Ste. Marie where he attended school and eventually gained employment at the Chromium Plant there. On September 26, 1941, he joined the army. Because of his height, he was called the tallest soldier in Sault Ste. Marie. He served as a private in the Royal Canadian Regiment. Lloyd was serving in Italy when he was killed on October 2, 1943, just two weeks before his twenty-second birthday. He is buried in the Bari War Cemetery, Bari, Italy. His name is inscribed on the Richards Landing cenotaph. Lloyd also lost a brother, killed in action, in France. Lloyd’s father was a veteran of World War I. GARCEAU, Joseph Willie Yvon Germain “Gerry” Gerry was born on August 29, 1950 in Montreal, Quebec. On July 28, 1968, he reported to CFB St. Jean for his basic training and training language. He went to CFSCE Kingston for his TQ3 TelOp 212. His first posting was 708 Commsqn Trenton and in 1972 he was transferred to 4 Svc Battalion Sig Trp in Germany. He was one of the first ones to be transferred with an Army unit. He was transferred to 711 Commsqn Valcartier in 1975, posted in Communication School in Kingston as an instructor in 1979 and transferred to Carp, Ottawa in 1982. In 1985, he returned to Germany and worked at Canadian Force Europe Distributing Authority under the Commgrp for the next six years. In 1991, his final posting was at DCOMSEC in Ottawa. Gerry retired as Warrant Officer on August 22, 1994 after 26 years of service. One week later, he started at the RCMP HQ as Communicator operator for nineteen years until July 1, 2013. He has been residing in Ottawa since 1991.
