173 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND GORDON, Allan Allan was born in Nestleton, Ontario on November 29, 1888, a farm boy that was good with his hands. He was not crazy about farm work but was good at carpentry and as a teen loved anything mechanical. When Allan was 21 years old, he moved to Toronto where he worked as a mechanic and as a chauffeur. He was married in 1913 and had two sons before he enlisted in the Army with the 198th Battalion on March 31, 1916. He transferred to the 136th Battalion to be with his father James and other local friends. He sailed to England in October 1916 and then in November to France with the 87th Battalion and then the 4th CDMT as a mechanic and driver for transport and ambulance until December 1916 when he was hospitalized with influenza and pneumonia. Allan was invalided back to Canada in May 1919 and was discharged on July 5, 1919. Returning home they had two more children, eventually settling in Oshawa. Allan worked for 31 years for General Motors as a pattern maker. He was an active member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 43. Allan passed away on March 10, 1966, at the age of 77. GORDON, Cuthbert Cuthbert was born in Nestleton, Ontario on November 22, 1885. A farm boy, he was the first to enlist while working in Saskatchewan. He enlisted in the Army on September 23, 1914 to serve during World War I. He was a part of the 1st Canadian Contingent which sailed on October 4, 1914, along with 30,000 other troops. They spent a horrible winter on the Salisbury Plains, marching and training in the wet and mud. Early in 1915, the 5th Battalion CEF was moved to France. During the second Battle ofYpres, Cuthbert suffered a gunshot wound in his foot, was gassed on April 24, 1915, and was hospitalized. He only spent two-and-a-half months in France. He was discharged on June 21, 1918. While in and out of hospitals, Cuthbert fell in love, married a young woman in England and brought his pregnant War Bride back to Canada in 1918. They had two children and Cuthbert spent his years in Saskatchewan custom farming on the prairies. He retired to Cyprus Hills until his death on April 22, 1970. Cuthbert was a charter and life member of The Royal Canadian Legion Abbey Branch 1 in Saskatchewan. GORDON, Allan Roy Roy was born in Nestleton, Ontario on December 4, 1920, the third son of Allan and Maude. Roy loved books and discovering how things worked. In high school, he learned Morse code and became very proficient in sending and receiving messages. He joined the Army on October 30, 1941, and was soon at Camp Debert, Nova Scotia training and becoming a signalman for the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals. He spent twenty months in England training until the 4th Canadian Armoured Division finally arrived in France. They saw action in France, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany. On February 13, 1946, he was discharged from the Army and returned to civilian life. Roy found work at the Thomas A. Edison of Canada Ltd. and Canadian Johns Mansville Co., working in their offices for many years. Roy never married and when both of his parents’ health started failing, Roy stayed home to be their caregiver. After suffering several strokes, on March 26, 2002, at the age of 81, Roy passed away.
