181 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND GRIFFITH, Joseph Wilmer Joseph Wilmer was born on May 22, 1913 in Kincardine Township, Ontario. He was one of ten children to parents Fredrick and Mary (McCormick). He was tall and played the bass drum. When Wilmer enlisted in the Army, he was based at Camp Petawawa before being sent to England and Africa. After the war, Wilmer continued to serve in the Army in Petawawa. He was proud of the fact that he had played the bass drum at the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. He served in Korea. Wilmer was a cook in the logging camp of J.J. and Harold Donnelly in the Greenock swamp and owned a bush lot in the area. Wilmer never married. He passed away in 1987 and is buried in Kincardine, Ontario. GROVES, Albert W. Albert was born in Cudham, England on June 27, 1898, to John and Charlotte Groves. The family immigrated to Canada and settled in the hamlet of Glamis, in Bruce County, Ontario where his father took up farming. Albert enlisted in the Army on February 2, 1916, at the age of nineteen, in Tiverton, Ontario and was attached to the Canadian Infantry (Western Ontario Regiment). In October 1916, he left Halifax and sailed to Liverpool, England. He soon found himself serving with the 1st Battalion in France. On August 30, 1918, Albert was killed in action. He is buried in Upton Wood Cemetery in Pas de Calais, France. GRIFFITHS, Harry Harry was born in Warrington, England in 1890. He joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force and served in Europe as a Sergeant with the 19th and 34th Battalion. Harry passed away in 1961.
