189 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND HARE, Roy Edgar Roy was born on March 11, 1925, in Dayton, Ontario. He was with the Essex and Kent Scottish Regiment in World War II after enlisting in the Army in November 1943 at the age of eighteen. An anti-tank gunner, he landed in France near the end of the war and was a prisoner of war in a German detention camp. He stayed in Europe for two more years. He was discharged in August 1946. Shortly after coming home from the war, he married Olive (Cranston). They had four children together. He continued serving in the Reserve Army with the 1st Hussars. In 2016, he received the National Order of the Legion of Honour, France Medal, and highest honour for bravery. He was able to attend numerous ceremonies in Canada and in Europe. Thanks to the Essex and Kent Scottish Regiment, he went to Belgium to present and dedicate the monument given by the regiment. He was president of Thessalon Branch 182 of The Royal Canadian Legion for three years and a member of Branch 62 in Sarnia for a total of 55 years. Roy passed away on March 29, 2021. HARMAN, George George was born in Wolverhampton, England on October 13, 1884. He came to Canada in 1911 to the Toronto area with his parents. He enlisted in Valcartier on September 24, 1914, in the Army with the 2nd Garr. Battalion. He went overseas and joined the 9th Battery, C.F.A. and served for four years in Canada, England and France. He lost a finger in 1917 and suffered a concussion from a bursting shell which left him with hearing loss in early 1918. He was discharged on September 12, 1918, and moved to the Brussels area where he raised a family of five on the farm. He was a charter member of the Royal Canadian Legion Brussels Branch 218 formed in October 1931 and served as President in 1940/1941. George passed away on February 26, 1941. He rests in the Veteran’s Plot, Prospect Cemetery in Toronto. HARKINS, William J. William was born in Ayrshire, Scotland. He enlisted in the Reserve Army on September 28, 1961 and served with the 4/5th Battalion B. Co. Royal Scots Fusiliers. He was in Germany in July 1965, in Norway with NATO in June 1966 and on Active Service in Aden,Yemen in November 1966. William was discharged on February 23, 1967. He is a thirty-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Bay Ridges Branch 606 in Pickering, Ontario.
