191 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND HARMON, Ernest Gordon Ernest was born in Toronto, Ontario on September 30, 1914. He enlisted in the Army on July 22, 1942 and served with 5th Canadian Armoured Division during World War II. Prior to going overseas in October 1942, he was in the Irish Regiment of Canada Reserve (Toronto) from the mid 1930’s. Overseas, he served in the United Kingdom, Central Mediterranean Area and Continental Europe during World War II. He received the 1939-1945 Star, Italy Star, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp and War Medal 1939-1945. Of all the honour battles, the most talked about was Coriano, Italy in 1944 and the Delfzijl Pocket, Northwest Europe in the Netherlands where they fought until the end of the war in May 1945. He was discharged on January 28, 1946. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Brigadier O.M. Martin Branch 345 in Toronto. Ernest passed away on October 31, 1986. HARTIN (HILL), Annie May Annie Hill was born in Dummer Township, Ontario on November 2, 1924. She married William Hartin in August 1942. Annie enlisted in the CWAC in July 1943 and headed to Kingston to be an ambulance driver during World War II, but she was sent to be stationed in Vancouver, British Columbia. In July 1944, Annie was transferred to Kingston to become a textile instructor. She was released from service in July 1945. Annie passed away on April 17, 1946. HARRISON, Stephan Andrew “Steve” Steve was born in Port Robinson, Ontario on March 16, 1915. He enlisted in the Navy (Reserve Force) on March 4, 1942. After boot camp, he was assigned to signal school in St. Hyacinthe, Quebec then on to naval radio school at HMCS Avalon, Newfoundland. He was assigned to the Frigate K456. The Saint John was sent overseas to join EG9 sub hunting group consisting of the Swansea, Matane, and Neon. The Saint John participated in the Murmansk Run, a convoy of 25 warships escorting 28 freighters to Archangel and Murmansk, Russia. The Saint John and its crew sunk two submarines and were still in service on D-Day. He was discharged on August 21, 1945. Steve received the Arctic Star, Italy Star, France and Germany Star, 1939-1945 Star, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp and War Medal 1939-1945. The Russian Commemorative Medal 1945-2005 was awarded to mark the 60th Anniversary of World War II. After his service, Steve became an amateur radio operator, call sign VE3BOE. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion H.T. Church Branch for over sixty years. Steve passed away on December 17, 2012.
