197 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND HEBNER, William Earl “Bill” Bill was born in Midland, Ontario on December 19, 1931. He joined the Special Forces in August 1950 and trained in Shilo, and Fort Lewis, Washington USA before going to Korea for one year. He retired in 1974 after 24 years as a Warrant Officer and stayed in Shilo as a supervisor for the German gunners using the Shilo gun range. He lives in Sydney River, Nova Scotia with his wife and daughter. He is a forty-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 80. HERRINGTON, Frederick William Frederick was born in Adelaide Township on July 12, 1887. In 1905, he resided in Forest, Ontario. He enlisted in the Army Regular Force on December 11, 1915, and served with the 149th Battalion, No. 1 Special Service Coy in Canada during World War I. He was discharged on November 7, 1917. Frederick passed away on April 20, 1968. HERGOTT, Anthony Jacob “Tony” Tony was born in St. Clements, Ontario on March 6, 1925, to Wilfred and Emily (Lorentz) Hergott along with ten siblings. A national registry was formed of eligible men for Home Defence, which Tony joined on September 28, 1944. His duties consisted of looking after public safety, defence of Canada, and maintaining supplies of services essential to the life of the community. The call for more soldiers prompted Tony to sign up. He joined active service with the Army (Regular Force) on March 6, 1945 and was assigned to the RCAMC (Medical Corps). Corporal Hergott received an honourable discharge on October 12, 1946. Tony was a faithful member of St. Michael’s Parish, worked for fifteen years at Sunar Hauserman, and was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 530 for 60 years. He was married to Madeline (Wagner) for 68 years and they raised a family. Anthony passed away on August 20, 2018 in his 93rd year and is laid to rest at Parkview Cemetery in Waterloo, Ontario. His name is inscribed on plaque 8 of Waterloo Legion Veteran’s Memorial Wall.
