199 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND HERRINGTON, Grant McKenzie Grant was born in Arkona, Ontario on March 18, 1924. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force on January 18, 1943, served as an air gunner with R Depot Warrington in England during World War II. Grant became ill with spinal meningitis and was honourably released and transferred to the Reserve, General Section, Class “E” on November 8, 1945. He received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp and the Air Gunner’s Badge. He bought a farm with a gravel pit and had truck loaders, etc. his entire life. Grant passed away on February 20, 2015. HEWITT, W. R. Harold Warrant Officer Class II W. R. Harold Hewitt was born in Elma Township on April 21, 1921, to Arthur and Almeda Hewitt. He was a farm boy and the youngest of ten. He served in the 51st Squadron of the Royal Canadian Air Force as a rear Air Gunner on the Halifax II during World War II. His plane was lost over Germany on May 1, 1943. He and his flight crew are buried in the Reichswald Forest War Cemetery in Germany. He received several medals including the 1939-1945 Star, Air Crew Europe Star, Air Gunners Badge, RCAF Operational Wings for gallant service in action against the enemy, War Medal 1939-1945, Defence Medal and Canadian Volunteer Service Medal. HERRINGTON, Roscoe Grant “Ross” Ross was born on February 9, 1895, in West Williams Township, Middlesex County, the son of Josiah Woodhill and Mary Bitner. He enlisted in the Army on June 1, 1917, joining the 25th Reserve No. 1 Training Depot, Western Ontario Regiment. He served in England in August 1917 as a Private. Ross was in hospital several times with health issues, mumps. Ross returned on the Saturnia, discharged in August 1919. He married Mary Helen Donaldson and returned to farming. Ross passed away on February 10, 1994 and is buried at the Arkona Cemetery.
