41 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND BALLANTYNE, James P. “Jim” Jim was born in 1917 in Hearst, Ontario. He enlisted in the Navy in 1939 and served as an Able Seaman doing convoy duty on HMCS Iroquois in Canada and the United Kingdom. His ship sank a German submarine but he cannot remember when or where. Jim was discharged in 1945 and received the 1939-1945 Star, the Atlantic Star with Clasp, the Defence Medal and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp. Jim was a member of Kapuskasing Legion Branch 85 for more than 40 years before he passed away in September 2003. BARKER, Delbert William Delbert was born on May 7, 1921, in Prenevue, Ontario. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) in Peterborough with the Prince of Wales Rangers on May 8, 1942. He was shipped overseas to England in September 1942 and was transferred to the Hastings-Prince Edward Regiment. In July 1943, he took part in the battle of Sicily and Italy. His unit was dubbed the Red Devils by the defeated Germans after scaling a 1000-foot cliff to take the mountain top walled town of Assoro. Delbert was wounded in the right leg and left hand and was treated and convalesced in an Italian army hospital. He was sent back to England to serve as a Quarter Master. Delbert was discharged on April 3, 1946, with the rank of Sergeant. He would go on to wed, have children, and live a full life settling in Trent River, Ontario. He was a Life Member of The Royal Canadian Legion Havelock Branch 389. Delbert passed away on September 13, 2007. BALLS, Percy W. Percy was born in 1893 in Barton, England. He served as a Private in the 1st Canadian Mounted Rifles, Saskatchewan Regiment, during World War I. He was reported missing in action on the Ypres Front on June 5, 1916. Percy is remembered with honour on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, in Ieper, WestVlaanderen, Belgium.
