53 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND BELROSE, Wesley Albert Wesley was born in Tobermory, Ontario on May 4, 1916. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) on October 4, 1939, and served with the Perth Regiment in the United Kingdom. He was discharged on October 30, 1945 and received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Tobermory Branch 290. Wesley passed away on December 10, 1988. BENSON, Gordon Milton Gordon was born on May 30, 1920, one mile east of Claremont, Ontario. His parents were Milton and Mary Benson. He went to Cedar Creek School and met Norma Beverly. They were married in 1940. Gordon worked for Pickering Township for 44 years. He left for war in September 1942 with the 24th Field Company, R.C.E. as a sapper. He was stationed on Aleutian Islands which is a small group of islands between Russia and Alaska. His children are Bob (1941), Grace (1946), Tom (1947) and Blanche (1951). He lived his entire life in Claremont where he was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 483 and passed away in August 1997. BENNETT, John B. John was born in Walton, Ontario on January 25, 1923. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force on April 5, 1943 and served as a Morse Code operator with 408 Goose Squadron in Canada and England. His plane lost three engines on its way back from a bombing mission and was forced down in Hanover, Germany in April 1945. They were walked for over a month until finally imprisoned in Petersberg. They were liberated by the British on VE-Day after which John sailed back to Canada on June 9, 1945 and was discharged on September 10, 1945. He graduated as a Veterinarian Surgeon from Guelph University in 1951 and practiced for 35 years in the Newmarket and Toronto areas, retiring in 1986. John was a member of Milton Wesley Legion Branch 426 before he passed away on April 2, 2012.
