55 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND BERNARDI, Alphonse Joseph Alphonse was born on January 16, 1923, in Halifax. His family had emigrated from Italy and stayed in Halifax for a few years then settled in Windsor, Ontario. He enlisted in the Army on November 30, 1942 and was with the 31st (Alta) Reece Regiment during World War II. He went through all the training and was on the docks to go to war overseas on September 1, 1945. The war ended on September 2, 1945. He was discharged shortly after and he decided to stay and travel. He went to England, Italy, and surrounding countries. He went home and brought Angelina back from Italy and married her. Alphonse worked and retired from Chrysler. They had two sons. Angelina passed away at age 90 in 2016, and Alphonse at age 96 on December 21, 2019. BERRY (PEARCE), Irene Jessie Irene was born in Exeter, England on February 1, 1920 and immigrated to Canada at the age of six, settling in Pictou County, Nova Scotia with her parents and siblings. She enlisted in the Canadian Army on August 13, 1942 and served in the Canadian Women’s Army as a support clerk in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Sergeant Pearce received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and the 19391945 Star. She married Sergeant Roy Berry on April 2, 1946. Upon her discharge from active duty on June 14, 1946, Irene and Roy purchased a farm in Kynoch Township in Ontario where they spent the rest of their lives. Irene passed away on January 3, 2010. BERRY, Andrew A. Andrew was born in Parkinson Township, Ontario on March 7, 1913. He enlisted in the Canadian Army in May 1942 and was wounded in England two months later on July 26. Upon recovery, he returned to active duty. Private Berry was killed in action in France on October 17, 1944 while driving a tractor (the vehicle following the advance of a rifle company) which ran over a land mine upsetting the tractor and pinning Andrew underneath. He passed away due to loss of blood. Private Berry was a member of the Pioneer Platoon at the time of his death. He received the 1939-1945 Star, the France and Germany Star, the War Medal 1939-1945, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and the Defence Medal.
