69 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND BREMNER, James Alexander James was born in Portland, Oregon. The family immigrated to Canada and settled in the Ethel area to farm. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) in London at the age of 23 on May 14, 1918 with the 1st Depot Battalion of W.O.R. He was shipped overseas in July 1918 on the HMT Bellerophon. He joined the N Wing CCC in England and then the 4th Canadian Res. Battalion in England. He returned home to Canada in September 1919 on the Tilburyon demobilization. He returned to the farm, married, and had two sons. The oldest son, William, took over the farm when his father, James, suffered poor health. They moved to another farm near Cranbrook, which had two houses and the families carried on until moving to the town of Brussels in 1975. James was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Brussels Branch 218 and received the 60th anniversary plaque for the branch in 1986. James passed away on May 28, 1986 and rests at the Mount Pleasant Cemetery near the hamlet of Ethel, Ontario. BRESSETTE, Ross Bernard Ross was born in Port Severn, Ontario on December 29, 1924, the son of Norman and Violet Bressette. On January 5, 1943, Ross enlisted in the Canadian Army (Regular Force) in Toronto, and completed basic infantry training at Camp Borden, Ontario. Due to his young age, he was initially sent with the Queen’s Own Rifles to perform guard duties on the east coast. Later reassigned to the Regina Rifle Regiment, Rifleman Ross Bressette landed in France in August 1944. During the unit’s advance in north-western Europe, Ross was reported as having been killed in action on February 19, 1945. An official letter sent to his mother stated that: “From official information we have received, your son was killed in action against the enemy.” Ross is buried in the Groesbeek Canadian War Cemetery in the Netherlands. In Canada, he is commemorated on page 498 of the Second World War Book of Remembrance. BRESSETTE, Maxim Jerry Maxim was born in Port Severn, Ontario, on December 4, 1893, the son of Edward and Annie Bressette. On May 15, 1916, he enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) with the 177th Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force, inWaubaushene, Ontario. On his attestation form, he is described as 23 years old and married with two children. He listed his trade as lumberman, and stated he had no previous military experience. Private Bressette sailed from Canada on the S.S. Metagama to arrive in England on May 14, 1917. After several months of training and a stay in a hospital in England, he landed in France in May 1918 to join his front-line unit, the 2nd Canadian Mounted Rifles. He served with that unit for the rest of the war. He returned to Canada to be discharged on March 23, 1919, and settled in the Port Severn area. Maxim passed away on August 30, 1960.
