73 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND BROWN, Russell George Russell was born in Oshawa, Ontario on January 18, 1926, the son of John and Ada Brown. John was a World War I CEF Veteran. Russell enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) on December 4, 1943, in Kingston, and trained in Cornwall and Ipperwash. He embarked to the UK on April 30, 1944. Attached to the Essex Scottish Regiment, he proceeded to France on July 3, 1944, then transferred to the Highland Light Infantry Regiment, clearing the channel ports. In the Antwerp area on September 19, 1944, Russell was wounded. In November, he was released from hospital and returned to his regiment. He stayed with the regiment and became part of the occupation forces at war’s end, staying in the Netherlands and Belgium until September. Returning to the UK in March 1946, Russell requested permission to marry Lillian Fowler of Scarborough, Yorks, England. The couple married on March 19, 1946 and embarked for Canada in April. After his discharge they settled in Havelock, Ontario. Russell worked for the CPR and as a guard at Millbrook Jail. They raised three children. He passed away on December 3, 2002, and is buried in Pine Grove cemetery in Havelock. BUDDEN, Brian William Brian was born on July 13, 1953, in Toronto, Ontario. He joined The Queen’s Own Rifles of Canada in 1970 on the SSTP at Moss Park Armoury. A graduate of Central Technical High School, he served with 3 Mechanized CDO in Germany, participating in NATO. Brian was appointed Regimental Sergeant-Major in 1987. In 1992, he was awarded the second clasp to his Canadian Decoration. He became involved with The QORAssociation and became President in 1995 until 2000. He is currently President. He conducted numerous tours to Normandy, Belgium, Holland and Germany and received the HRH Golden Jubilee Medal. In 2013, he was presented with the HRH Diamond Jubilee Medal for his continuing work with Veterans. Brian received The Minister of Veterans Affair Commendation in 2014. He is a 30-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 258, serves on the Executive, and is involved in the Poppy Campaign. He serves as The Cadet Liaison Officer for 3 Corps, Army, Navy and Air. He worked for IBM Canada, and currently enjoys his time at an education firm. He enjoys Military History, traveling, sports, reading and family, especially watching the grandchildren grow. He makes his home in Mississauga. BRYAN, Joseph W. Joseph was born in Campbellford, Ontario in 1910. He enlisted in 1939 and served in France, Holland and Germany with the Royal Canadian Engineers. Sergeant Bryan was wounded in action before he was discharged in 1945. Joseph was awarded the Bronze Lion from Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands for “Distinguishing himself during the operations for the liberation of the Netherlands in enemy-occupied territory, by performing acts of exceptional gallantry and tact, thereby setting a praiseworthy example under difficult circumstances.” Joseph died in 1974.
