77 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND BUMSTEAD, Daniel Francis “Dan” Dan was born in Chilliwack, BC on November 30, 1966. He enlisted on May 8, 1985, completing Basic Training in Cornwallis, NS and Trades Training in Chilliwack. His postings include: 2 Combat Engineers Regiment CFB Petawawa in January 1986; Basic Parachutist Course in March 1986 becoming an Airborne Engineer; Lahr Germany (4 CER) in August 1987. In May 1989, he was promoted to Corporal and in June 1991 posted to 8 Field Engineer Regiment, Edmonton as support staff (Reserve Unit). In July 1994, he was posted to (2 CER) CFB Petawawa; IFOR Bosnia between January and March 1996; promoted to Master Corporal in July 1996; SFOR Bosnia fromAugust 1997 to February 1998. In July 1998, he was promoted to Sergeant and to Warrant Officer in July 2003. He was at ISAF Roto 0 Afghanistan fromAugust 2003 to February 2004 and did French Language training from June 2004 to June 2005. He was at Canadian Forces Training and Development Centre, CFB Borden in July 2005. In May 2008, he retired from the Regular Force transferring to the Reserve Force at Canadian Forces Chaplain School, CFB Borden as Training Warrant/School Sergeant Major. In July 2013, Dan retired from the Reserve Force. His medals include the General Campaign Star - SouthWest Asia, Special Service Medal, Canadian Peacekeeping Service Medal, NATO Medal for Former Yugoslavia, and Canadian Decoration with Clasp. He lives in Wasaga Beach. BURGESS, John Malcolm John was born in Sarnia, Ontario on January 16, 1916. He enlisted in the Army on May 15, 1942. John served with the 48th Light AA Battery in Canada, the United Kingdom and Continental Europe during World War II, attaining the rank of Sergeant. He was discharged on February 26, 1946. John passed away in October 1977. BUNDA, Wesley F. Wesley was born on February 17, 1921 in Mosa Township, Ontario. In August 1940, he joined the Kent Regiment in Chatham, Ontario, transferred to Britain in the winter of 1942-43 then went to the Highland Light Infantry of Canada (part of the 3rd Canadian Division) in June 1943. On June 6, 1944, he landed at Bernièressur-Mer with his carrier and anti-tank gun and fought from the Normandy beaches through France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. Accomplished in different water landings, the 3rd Canadian Division was nick-named “The Water Rats”. Sergeant Bunda, decorated by Viscount Alexander, earned the Military Medal for Bravery for his actions at the Rhine Crossings in March 1945. He was discharged in December 1945 and married in Wallaceburg, Ontario in 1947. He had met his future bride in November 1944 in Ghent, Belgium. Wesley worked for Dominion Glass and Nestlé Canada before retiring in 1985 as a second class stationery engineer. He was a member of Wallaceburg Legion Branch 18 for more than forty years before he passed away on November 2, 2000.
