83 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND CAMPBELL, Cecil Frederick Cecil was born on September 22, 1916 in Sharbot Lake, Ontario to Frederick Campbell and Nellie Garrett. Cecil joined the Lanark and Renfrew Scottish Regiment on January 10, 1941 and joined the Canadian Army (Regular Force) on November 26, 1941 and served overseas in the United Kingdom and Continental Europe. He was wounded in action in Holland on July 25, 1944, sustaining multiple wounds to his back. While recovering in England, he met and married Olive Jean Cox of Nottingham. Cecil was awarded the 1939-1945 Star, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal and Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. He was discharged on August 9, 1946 and returned home with his wife. He worked for the CPR as a carpenter until retiring in 1980. He was a Life Member of The Royal Canadian Legion Lanark Branch 395 for over 40 years. Cecil passed away on December 16, 1998. CAMPBELL, Lloyd George Lloyd was born to Thomas Campbell and Mary Cadham on August 1, 1921, in Hilton Beach, a small community on St. Joseph Island, east of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. He moved to London, Ontario where he was employed at a hosiery mill as a knitter. On July 8, 1940, he joined the Royal Canadian Navy Volunteer Reserve. He served on the HMCS Eyebright and then joined Combined Operations on the HMS Quebec. Lloyd was a coxswain (operator) on a Higgins boat (landing craft) at the Dieppe landings on August 19, 1942. During this operation, he was hit in the legs by machine gun fire. He was then taken prisoner and transferred to Stalag 9’s hospital in Obermassfeld, near Erfurt. This hospital was run by British, Canadian andAustralian medical staff. Lloyd’s right leg had to be amputated below the knee and when that did not go well, another amputation above the knee was needed. Lloyd succumbed to his injuries on October 21, 1942 and was buried with military honours in Germany. He now lies in the Charlottenburg cemetery outside of Berlin. CAMPBELL, Christopher Robert “Chris” Chris was born on September 11, 1941 in Sudbury and raised near Massey, Ontario. He enlisted in the RCAF on April 2, 1963, completing basic training at St Jean, trade training at Bases Clinton, Borden and Greenwood, NS. He transferred to 415 Squadron in Summerside, PEI as an Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) Radar Technician in December 1964, serving as Argus ground crew for eleven years. In 1975, he transferred to D Squadron at Base Kingston to teach Basic Electronics to new recruits. After extensive courses in Anaheim, California in 1979, he transferred to 407 Squadron at Base Comox, BC to maintain and teach a ground computer system for the new CP140 ASW aircraft. He transferred to Ottawa as a Maintenance Manager (LCMM) for ASW in 1983 and in 1988 after 25 years he was released on December 7, 1988 as a Warrant Officer to become a civilian employee of DND. He served 19 years in various positions for DND, culminating as an underwater acoustic and sonobuoy manager with NATO responsibilities. In all, he served DND into his 45th year, retiring in 2007. He received the Canadian Forces Decoration plus bar (CD1) for his service. He resides in Orleans, Ontario and is a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Orleans Branch 632.
