85 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND CAMPBELL, Robert Bates “Jack” ”Bob” Robert (Jack/Bob) was born in Birtle, Manitoba on July 15, 1912. He went to Sudbury in 1938, working for International Nickel and Falconbridge as a miner. He enlisted in the army in Toronto on October 25, 1944 and completed basic and advanced infantry training in Brantford, Borden and Meaford by July 5, 1945. As the war in Europe was winding down, he volunteered for service in the Pacific and as part of the Queen’s Own Rifles, transferred for training to Vernon, BC. The pacific war ended before he went overseas; however, he remained in the Vancouver holding unit performing escort duties for Japanese nationals until June 1946 when he returned to Toronto and released in July 1946. His decorations are the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and the War Medal 1939-1945. He purchased a farm under the Veteran’s Land Act near Massey, Ontario where he remained for the rest of his life. He was committed to The Royal Canadian Legion Massey Branch 432 for over 40 years and awarded a life membership for his service to the branch. He passed away on September 25, 1991. CAMPBELL, William George “Bill” Bill was born in Bruce Township, Ontario on December 7, 1894. He enlisted in the Army on January 8, 1916 and served with 160th Bruce Battalion “D” Company and 2nd Canadian Pioneers and 4th Canadian Engineers in France duringWorldWar I. After Bill’s discharge on May 29, 1919, he returned to Tiverton where he married and was the proud father of seven daughters. He not only was a farmer and blacksmith, but later engaged in real estate and insurance. Bill was keenly interested in the community and served as Reeve of Tiverton. He was a dedicated member of The Royal Canadian Legion Tiverton Ferris Branch 430 for over fifty years, the Bruce Masonic Lodge and Past District Deputy Grand Master of the IOOF Silver City Lodge. Bill passed away on February 21, 1971. CAMPBELL, Wilfred Alexander Wilfred was born on October 3, 1898, in Cheltenham, Ontario. He joined the 126th Battalion, CEF in Toronto, Ontario on November 22, 1915 to serve during World War I. On December 4, 1916, he was taken on strength by the 38th Battalion and sent to Europe. On August 1, 1918, he was promoted to Corporal and to Sergeant on January 22, 1919. He was discharged on June 16, 1919 and returned to Canada on the HMT Olympic. Wilfred passed away on June 27, 1978 and now rests at Boston Mill Cemetery in Cheltenham.
