87 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND CAMPBELL, William R. William was born in Middle Stewiacke, Nova Scotia on May 18, 1914. He joined the Air Force on July 22, 1942 and served in Canada and England with 405 Squadron (Pathfinder), 419 Moose Squadron and 408 Goose Squadron. He finished one tour (25 trips), re-mustered, and at war’s end, had completed a second tour plus two more trips for a total of 52 trips. Discharged on July 21, 1945, Flying Officer Campbell received the Distinguished Flying Cross, the France and Germany Star, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Bar, the 1939-1945 Star, the Defence Medal and the King George V Medal. He was a member of Kapuskasing Legion Branch 85 for more than forty years before he passed away on September 22, 1989. CARLETON, Earl Neil Earl was born on May 21, 1897, in Kincardine Township, Bruce County, Ontario. He joined the 106th Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force onApril 4, 1916 and served with the 2nd Canadian Machine Gun Company in England and France during World War I. As a result of being wounded in the upper left arm (entry and exit), he was declared medically unfit and eventually discharged on April 4, 1919. Earl died on April 20, 1959. CAPNERHURST, Clifford “Cliff” Cliff was born in Highland Park, Michigan on May 7, 1926. He moved with his family toWindsor, Ontario in 1939. He enlisted in the Army on December 8, 1941. After basic training in Chatham and advanced training in Petawawa, he was assigned to the 3rd Medium Regiment. Cliff fought in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. He distinguished himself by winning the French Croix de Guerre with Bronze Star. Cliff was discharged from the Canadian Army in London, Ontario on September 13, 1945. Three months later, he re-enlisted in the American Army, serving in the Medical Corps at a hospital in Nuremberg, Germany. After his discharge in 1948, Cliff went to work as a private detective and then as a security guard at the Ford Tank Plant. He retired in 1980 and passed away on September 29, 1991. He was a proud thirteen-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 594.
