89 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND CARNEGIE, David Gordon “Gord” Gord was born in Port Perry, Ontario on October 27, 1923. He enlisted on July 27, 1942 with the Canadian Field Force, #36 Company, and served in Canada during World War II. Gord and his cousin George were sent for basic training and Gord was recognized as a talented hockey player (goalie). He was recruited by Captain Kilbourn to play for the base hockey team at Dunnville Air Station. After the hockey season ended, Gord was transferred back to Manning Pool then was sent to Centralia (near London) followed by the Canadian Air Force on August 3, 1943. He was subsequently sent to Camp Borden, Guelph, Mountain View and Edmonton where he remained until March 1946. Gord received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal for his war service. He was a member of Port Perry Legion Branch 419 for fifty years before he passed away on June 3, 1995. CARRUTHERS, Randolph Garnet “Randy” Randy was born on January 16, 1922, to Elwood and Hazel Carruthers, in Claremont, Ontario. He grew up with his parents and sister Norrine (Hill) farming outside of Claremont. Randy enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) in 1942 where he was a mechanic in the tank division stationed in Nova Scotia. A few years after he was discharged, he married Evelyn Tweedie on December 7, 1946, and together they had a family of fifteen children. They raised these children residing mainly at their residence on Wixon Street in Claremont. Randy was an active member of the community with the Claremont Lions Club. He also coached hockey and baseball for many years. Randy worked at General Motors for a time prior to joining the Pickering Township until his retirement at the age of 58. In the early 1970s, Randy and Evelyn took over the Corner Lunch at the four corners of town. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Claremont Branch 483. Randy passed away on March 7, 1983, at the age of 61. CARROLL, Howard Franklin Howard was born in Hobart, Wisconsin on January 1, 1920. He enlisted in the Air Force on February 6, 1941 and served with 162 Squadron during World War II. He was discharged on October 2, 1945. Howard received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 109 in Goderich, Ontario for sixty years. Howard passed away on October 12, 2007.
