Military Service Recognition Book Volume IX ONTARIO COMMAND

We Remember

1 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND I wholeheartedly commend the Ontario Command of the Royal Canadian Legion on the release of this ninth edition of the Military Service Recognition Book. As we slowly return to the new normal that our brave frontline workers have fought to achieve, one lesson I hope we carry from the last two years is a respect and appreciation for the service of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF). Through uncertain times, the CAF was a reliable source of security in an uncertain and ever-changing environment. As a country constantly working towards a stronger, more resilient society, the tireless commitment of our brave men and women in uniform sets an example of what can be achieved when we look outwards with courage and compassion. The stories of the individuals in this book are stories of bravery, honour, and an unwavering dedication that I hope fills those of us privileged to read and reflect on these stories with deep gratitude and pride. 3 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND Within the pages of this Military Service Recognition Book are the stories of the brave women and men in uniform who served our country and fought so that we may live in freedom. Canada has long history as a defender of freedom and peacekeeper of the world. In the First World War, the Second World War, Korea and Afghanistan, whenever the world's most evil powers rose, Canadians were there and ready to fight. I want to applaud the Royal Canadian Legion Ontario Provincial Command for the vital work you do. Year after year, you honour those who have served or are still serving in our Canadian Armed Forces, the Commonwealth or Allied Forces. Through your programs, you help them transition to civilian life, and educate the next generation about our veterans’ sacrifices. We, as proud Ontarians, stand united in saluting these true Canadian heroes. I hope you will find these stories as inspiring and humbling as I do. Doug Ford Premier A MESSAGE FROM PREMIER DOUGFORD

5 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND Finally, we can see some light at the end of this very nasty covid tunnel which has not only affected our own personal lives, but has had a serious impact on Vol. IX of the Military Service Recognition Book and the number of applications received, which is way down from what we had been receiving for our previous volumes. That being said, it still doesn’t take away from the importance of this publication and the valuable information it contains within its pages. Vol. X is only one year away, and what didn’t make it into Vol. IX we will surely find room to insert into Vol. X. My Father, RCAF [ #419 Moose Sqdrn./39th Recce Group] LAC Matthew R. Moore WW2, and his brother, my uncle, RCNVR Seaman James R. Moore, HMCS Eyebright, corvette [7 trips across the Atlantic on convoy protection duty] had their photos and bios appear on pages 363 Vol. III & 323 in Vol. V respectively. If I had more information on my Father’s Father, a WW1 veteran, who had trained at Camp Borden, Ontario as a pilot, his picture would also be in a book. This is our history, Canadian history, I can’t think of a better way to honour and remember those heroes of yesterday and today. For those of you that offer a Street Banner Program have them also fill out an application for the MSRB at the same time, as most will be more than happy to do so. Thank you to comrade Ron Goebel, the hardworking Ontario Command Chair of the MSRB, the ever helpful staff at the Ontario Command Headquarters, Ontario Correspondent Mary Ann Goheen, Ontario Command Public Relations Officer Carolyn McCaul, plus the many volunteers at the Branch, Zone and District level who tirelessly continue to produce on a regular basis. Many thanks to you all for your efforts as they are certainly appreciated by many. We will Remember Them. 7 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND A MESSAGE FROMTHE CHAIR As we all know, the past two years have not been easy for any of us having to live through unprecedented times with the COVID-19 pandemic. However, we have still managed to continue our work in recognizing our Veterans and in fulfilling our mandate with this very important Remembrance program. Unfortunately, due to various COVID health restrictions, Legion Branches were closed most of the time during this past year. In turn, it resulted in a decline in the number of submissions that we received for publication in this book. Since we have been utilizing winningYouth Education Posters for the front cover of our books for the past few years, it was felt that we would expand this past exercise by promoting our annual Provincial Command Youth Education Literary Competitions in this Volume. A program that is centered around Remembrance. So along with Veteran biographies and photographs, we have included winning poems, posters and essays for everyone to see just how amazing our youth are that compete in these annual competitions. I am certain that everyone will thoroughly enjoy reading and viewing these great works by our youth of today. It is hard to believe that we are now introducing you to Volume IX of our annual Military Service Recognition Book. Back in 2013, we were very proud to introduce this Remembrance program to the Legion Branches and membership within our Ontario Provincial Command. And since that time, I am happy to say that the program has been an overwhelming success in recognizing the many Veterans within the Province of Ontario through this special Remembrance publication. Now that our Branches are now back to some sort of normalcy, we would like to appeal to all Legion members and the general public to now actively promote our program through the submission of Veteran submissions. Information regarding our program including a submission form, may be found on our Ontario Provincial Command website at www.on.legion.ca I would like to take this opportunity of thanking all of our Branches within our Command who have worked diligently in providing Veteran submissions for our books over the past nine years. For it has been through their efforts and the combined contributions of our Zones, Districts, and Command that has enabled us to showcase many of our Veterans within the Province of Ontario. Your dedication, support, and cooperation towards the success of this very important program is certainly appreciated. I ask that you keep up the good work. Special thanks to our two Provincial Coordinators Carolyn McCaul and MaryAnn Goheen, our District Coordinators, District Commanders, Zone Commanders, the staff at Ontario Command, our Provincial President, members of our Ladies’Auxiliary, and all of my fellow Senior Elected Officers of Ontario Command. It is only through everyone’s continued efforts that we will continue to be successful in telling the story about Veterans in communities across this great Province of ours. It has been both a privilege and an honour to have served you as Chair of this great Veterans Remembrance program since its inception in 2013. We will Remember them!
