161 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND KINZIE, Willard L. Willard was born in Blair, Ontario on September 25, 1919. He served from August 19, 1942 to April 3, 1945, joining the Corps of Canadian Firefighters. After the war, he purchased a one-route dairy in Guelph, Ontario and Lakeview Dairy in Barrie in 1947, employing 270 people when he sold it in 1971. He then started a non-profit Hiking and Adventure Club, leading groups on over 500 trips on all Continents, climbing thousands of mountains and completing many long distance trails, including the Appalachian Trail at 2200 miles. He is thought to be the oldest person to have climbed Mount Kilimanjaro on his 79th birthday. He was also Chairman, President and Director of several companies and organizations, was very active in the community and received many awards, including the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal. Willard was elected First Mayor of the new city of Barrie on January 1, 1959. He has been a member of Hespeler/ Barrie Legion Branch 147 for forty-seven years. Willard and his wife Ruth were married for 69 years and had two sons and a daughter. Ruth passed away in 2011. KNIGHT, Garnet Garnet was born in Kearney, Ontario on August 7, 1909. He joined the Army on July 2, 1941 and served in Canada, England, France, Holland and Germany with the Queen’s Own Rifles. A&SH of C (Princess Louise’s) 1st Battalion, until his discharge on October 30, 1945. He was wounded in action at the Battle of Kusten Canal in Germany on April 22, 1945 and he fought with the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders of Canada during the liberation of The Netherlands. Garnet and his wife Edith raised ten children. He was a member of Orillia Legion Branch 34 for a year before he died on December 17, 1973. KIRBY, Wesley Harold “Wes” Wes was born in Prescott, Ontario on October 21, 1929. He joined the Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers in January 1951 and served in Canada, Germany, Rafia and Ismailia in Egypt until his discharge in November 1975. Wes retired to Brantford, Ontario and later moved to Delhi. He was a founding member of the RCEME Association of Niagara, LAD 103, holding the position of Vice President for several years. He was also a member of and Past President of Major Walter Barnard Legion Branch 125. Wes passed away on June 9, 2013.
