137 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND DOWDALL, Francis T. “Frank” Frank was born on May 15, 1930 in Toronto, ON. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy on June 3, 1948. He served on HMCS Magnificent and HMCS Bonaventure. He qualified as an aerospace engineer and became a computer programmer. He transferred to the Public Service as a programmer and spent 13 years in Ottawa developing computer applications at DCASD and system manager with the Intelligence and Security Branch. He served for 30 years and retired on November 3, 1978 with the rank of Lieutenant (N). He was awarded the Canadian Forces Decoration with one bar and the Special Service Medal with NATO bar. DREW, Douglas S. Douglas was born on June 16, 1921 in Guelph, Ontario. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force on August 5, 1940. He served as a mechanic with 417 “City of Windsor” Combat Support Squadron in Africa, Malta, Sicily, Italy and England during World War II. Awarded the Canadian Decoration Medal (CD), Douglas was discharged on June 16, 1973. DOWNHAM, George F. George was born 18 September 1920 in Strathroy Ontario. Enlisted 21 June 1941 as a Lieutenant with the Perth Regiment of the Canadian Infantry Corps. In September 1944 “C” Company began their advance to the Coriano Ridge in Italy. The advance was over very difficult country and under intense fire and darkness. The leading section became confused and George immediately went ahead of his men leading them through heavy mortar and machine gun fire to the top, then went alone to determine the best line of approach. The platoon advanced, captured their objective and dug in. During this action a number of Mark 1V tanks approached the left flank. He moved and engaged fire disabling two tanks, damaging one and the rest withdrew. He was awarded the Military Cross for his bravery and inspiring leadership. Other decorations included CVSM, Italy Star, Defence Medal, King George Medal, and the War Medal. Discharged Aug 1945. Passed away May 2008 at the age of 87.
