We Remember

1 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND I am pleased to commend the Ontario Command of the Royal Canadian Legion on the release of the tenth edition of the Military Service Recognition Book. This milestone publication demonstrates the unwavering dedication and commitment of the Royal Canadian Legion to preserving the legacy and achievements of Ontario’s brave veterans and active service members. The stories and tributes within the pages of this book serve not only as a testament to the sacrifices made but also as an inspiration for future generations. Let us take the time to reflect on the profound impact these heroic individuals have had in shaping the history of our province and our country. Their selfless service and courage will always be held in the highest regard. Elizabeth Dowdeswell

3 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND Warm greetings to our veterans and everyone who has contributed to the 10th annual edition of the Royal Canadian Legion Ontario Command’s Military Service Recognition Book. In these pages you’ll find stories of true Canadian heroes — those who have served and are still serving in our Canadian Armed Forces, the Commonwealth or Allied Forces. In the First World War, the Second World War, Korea and Afghanistan, whenever the world's most evil powers rose, Canadians were there and ready to fight. Many made the ultimate sacrifice and, for that, we will be forever grateful. Many more continue to serve today as peacekeepers wherever there is conflict in the world. I thank the hard-working team behind the Ontario Command for this worthy recognition of those who serve our country, here in Canada and around the world. As a proud member of The Royal Canadian Legion Coronation Branch 286, I know firsthand how much Legion branches do to build better communities. It is my hope that these stories will help present and future generations of Ontarians understand the price we pay for our freedoms, and truly appreciate the blessings of democracy. Best wishes to everyone. Doug Ford Premier A MESSAGE FROM PREMIER DOUGFORD

5 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND Here we are at Volume #10 of the Military Service Recognition Book, to say the least this edition has proved to be a real struggle compared to the previous editions in trying to gather enough submissions so that it could finally go to print, and that really only happened because of the constant reminders that our MSRB Chair, Comrade Ron, sent out almost weekly in the closing stages to all of our Branches in Ontario. Comrades, do I need to remind you that not only do these publications provide an extensive record of our Canadian Military History over the years but they also bring in, through the advertising that appears in each volume, thousands of dollars that we can use to help subsidize the many veteran programs that we support. Unlike some of the other projects we take on this particular project is not really tied down to extensive deadlines all the time, this is something that someone can work on at their leisure and submit whenever they are ready, 1, 2, 3 or 10 submissions at a time, it doesn’t really matter. The only figure that really counts is prior to printing each edition and that is the final tally, 400 plus is the preferred number at the very least. Now I personally know that most branches have lots and lots of photos on their walls, many with a story to tell, are they in the Military Service Recognition Book? Maybe they could be, think about it, please. Again a big thank you goes out to our hardworking MSRB crew, comrade Ron Goebel, Chair of the MSRB Program, the staff at our Ontario Command Office, Ontario Correspondent, Mary Ann Goheen and last but not least, Ontario Command PRO Chair, Comrade Carolyn McCaul. Not forgetting the countless volunteers at the Branch, Zone and District levels, without your continued support and dedication, none of this would have been possible, a big thank you to you all. We will Remember Them. Derek Moore Provincial President The Royal Canadian Legion Ontario Command A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

7 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND A MESSAGE FROMTHE CHAIR It is hard to believe that we are publishingVolume X of our Military Service Recognition Book. And I am very proud to have been the Chair of this program for all of these ten years. It has been both an honour and a privilege and an experience that I will not forget. During these past ten years, we have published close to 7,000 Veteran biographies and photographs in our books of Remembrance highlighting the service our Veterans within the Province of Ontario have contributed to our country in giving us the freedom that we enjoy today. Thanks to the terrific advertising support that we have received over these past ten years, as well as very generous individual donations, our Command has also received close to two million dollars during this time. We truly appreciate all of the support that we have received which has allowed us to support several Veteran Transition Programs that we at Ontario Command support. As for Veteran submissions, we still have a lot of work to do as the numbers that we have received over the past two years have been dwindling. We would ask that if you are a Veteran or a family member of a Veteran, that you take the time to submit a submission form and photograph to your local Legion Branch for publication into one of our books of Remembrance. With an estimated total of 223,400 Veterans living within the Province of Ontario, and many, many more Veterans who unfortunately have passed away, there are still many Veterans and family members of Veterans that could have a Veterans bio and photograph published in one of our books. I would like to take this opportunity of thanking all of our Branches within our Command who have worked diligently in providing Veteran submissions for our books over the past ten years. For it has been through their efforts and the combined contributions of our Zones, Districts, and Command that has enabled us to showcase many of our Veterans within the Province of Ontario. Your dedication, support, and cooperation towards the success of this very important program is certainly appreciated. I ask that you continue to keep up the good work. Special thanks to our two Provincial Coordinators Carolyn McCaul and Mary Ann Goheen, our District Coordinators, District Commanders, Zone Commanders, the staff at Ontario Command, our Provincial President, members of our Ladies’Auxiliary, and all of my fellow Senior Elected Officers of Ontario Command. It is only through everyone’s continued efforts that we will continue to be successful in telling the story about Veterans in communities across this great Province of ours. We will Remember them! 9 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND A MESSAGE FROMTHE LADIES’ AUXILIARY PRESIDENT It is a pleasure, on behalf of the Ladies Auxiliary members to say welcome to the tenth volume of the Military Service Recognition book. I would like to encourage all members of our Auxiliaries, who are also Veterans, to submit their stories, if they haven't already. This is a wonderful way for everyone to hear, learn about, and remember, not only those who served and paid the supreme sacrifice, but to honor those who are currently serving in the Canadian Armed Forces. Thank you to Comrades Ron Goebel, Carolyn McCaul and Mary Ann Goheen for their continuous hard work and dedication to make this the success it is. Also, to Fenety Marketing for their continued partnership to make this endeavour the success that it is. I hope you enjoy reading the stories about our Veterans, and encourage everyone to support this endeavour by submitting their story. Yours in Comradeship, Kathy Moggy Ladies Auxiliary Provincial President

Military Service Recognition Book Volume X 26 There are numerous benefits to joining our apprenticeship program including hands-on learning, meeting new people with similar interests, learning while earning and further discovering your interests in the trade. We hire apprentices from the ICI sector and local students interested in engaging in an apprenticeship program with the Toronto District School Board (TDSB). At the Maintenance Construction and Skilled Trades Council, we assist students by helping them get started with the right affiliate. They then attend school three different times over the course of their program for eight weeks at a time, this is the in-class portion of the program. The whole program runs for approximately 5-6 years. Currently, we have 20 apprentices working at the TDSB. We are available to assist you in any further inquiries you may have. Maintenance, Construction & Skilled Trades Council 95 Shorting Road, Toronto, ON M1S 5B9 Tel: 416-406-0115 Fax: 416-406-3410 Email: ms@tradescouncil.com tradescouncil.com Proud to Support and Honour our Veterans The Maintenance and Construction Skilled Trades Council (MCSTC) represents traditional unions and 20 individual trades. Past divisions of the maintenance, construction, and facility management have achieved a significant amount of recognition from both the National and International. This is due to the fact that they attained ISO 9002 Registration and National Quality Institute awards. Furthermore, management was amongst the first public sector divisions to receive such recognition. As a result, we presently use this acknowledgment as a goal for the Council to reach and to surpass in the near future. The MCSTC has implemented many business practices which are not usually found in other public sector and unionized maintenance and construction departments by using creative business methods, staying competitive and having the ability to work within tight budgets. For instance, we portray the ability to confront and negotiate with private sector construction contractors in hopes of establishing construction projects at the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) and facilities. While the TDSB embraces fair wage policies that help ensure the TDSB attracts and retains skilled trades, especially in a boom construction times where private sector rates for skilled trades are exceeding the public sector, this is no rite of passage for TDSB skilled trades to perform all construction projects. If the TDSB skilled trades can offer the lowest bid against private sector contractors in tendered projects, we can be awarded the work. The bidding process also helps ensure the TDSB gets on-going competitive pricing for construction projects.
