1 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND I offer my congratulations to the Ontario Command of the Royal Canadian Legion on this fifth edition of its Military Service Recognition Book. The many brave individuals of the Canadian Armed Forces, Commonwealth Forces, and Allied Forces have undeniably played a vital role throughout history, cementing the strong and free society that we enjoy today. This volume tells their stories while recalling the visible and invisible injuries that all too often affect those who put service above self. May this book foster a spirit of gratitude and encourage us all to never forget those who have served and continue to serve, and their families. Elizabeth Dowdeswell

3 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND A MESSAGE FROM PREMIER DOUGFORD On behalf of the Government of Ontario, I extend my warmest greetings to everyone reading the fifth edition of the Military Service Recognition book. This book plays a vital role in recognizing and celebrating Ontarians who have either served or are still serving in our Canadian Armed Forces, the Commonwealth or Allied Forces. I would like to thank The Ontario Command and The Royal Canadian Legion for your continued work in remembering, representing and serving the needs of both veterans and those in service now. As a proud member of the Royal Canadian Legion Coronation Branch 286, I know first-hand the important role that local legions play in our communities and that is why our Government has committed to introducing legislation that ensures that all Ontario RCL branches pay no municipal property tax. Additionally, I am proud of our Government’s commitment to building the first provincial public memorial in Ontario to honour Canadian veterans of the Afghanistan war. As a province and as a country, we must honour the brave men and women of the Canadian Armed Forces who served in Afghanistan, including the 159 who gave the ultimate sacrifice. Supporting our veterans, serving military members and their families should unite all Canadians and I will always defend the importance of respecting and honouring our men and women in uniform. The stories of bravery and sacrifice found within this book help us remember those who sacrificed so much to uphold the freedoms we enjoy today. We must continue to honour those who have served, and continue to serve, our country and defend the values of our society through their sacrifice. I am honoured to add my voice to this important piece of recognition and remembrance. Doug Ford Premier

5 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Comrades All, It is an honour to Welcome You to the Fifth Edition of our Ontario Command Military Service Recognition Book. On behalf of the officers, members and staff of Ontario Command, it is my pleasure to bring greetings and extend our sincere thanks to those who have contributed to this book. Whether you are one of our featured military ‘heroes’, a caring Family member, an advertiser, a donor, a branch co-ordinator, our Special team of Chairman Ron Goebel, Provincial Co-ordinators Carolyn McCaul and Mary Ann Goheen, or our publishers, everyone had an invaluable role in the creation of our books. Without YOU, this tribute to Ontario’s past and present servicemen and servicewomen of whom we are all proud and grateful, would not be a success! To the Veterans, with us, featured in this edition, and to the Families of those passed on, a special thank you for sharing a little bit of yourselves, or in memory of your ‘hero’. Each submission, though brief, is a part of the history of our great province, of Ontario’s military legacy. This is a proud history which will live on, with these books, to be shared with future generations. To Legionnaires, this book is a symbol of our obligation, our promise to perpetuate Remembrance, not to glorify war. It is to recognize and appreciate the sacrifice of every Ontario resident who served or is still serving, for voluntarily accepting the challenge of service to country. To those with stories, yet to tell, please contribute, be part of Ontario’s military history. We will Always Remember Them! To All, travel safe along Life’s Highway. In Comradeship, Sharon McKeown Provincial President The Royal Canadian Legion Ontario Command

7 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN Our mission in the Royal Canadian Legion is to serve Veterans, which includes serving military and RCMP members and their families, to promote Remembrance, and to serve our communities and our country. It is also our duty to perpetuate the memory and deeds of the fallen and to pass on to their families and descendants the traditions for which they stand. Recognition and Remembrance are small ways we can show that their sacrifices are not forgotten. Through the publication of our annual Military Service Recognition Book, we are assisting in fulfilling our mission and duty to our Veterans. This year, we are proud to introduce our fifth publication within Ontario Command, in which we recognize and remember our Veterans with pride and honour. Through our first five publications, we have been able to recognize over 3500 of those who have served and are serving in our Canadian Armed Forces, as well as raised funds to assist in providing assistance to our Veterans through various Veteran Transition programs supported by Ontario Command. It is our youth who we must entrust to carry the torch of Remembrance in the future. For this reason, we have had them involved in the makeup of our publication. Each year, rather than utilizing a photograph to depict Remembrance on the cover of our books, we have utilized a poster that a student has crafted and entered into our annual Royal Canadian Legion’s Youth Education Poster Competition. We congratulate those students who have had their poster chosen as the cover for one of our books, and we encourage all students to compete in our annual poster competition. The success of our program during our first five years would not have been possible if it were not for the combined support, cooperation and dedication of our Branches, Zones, Districts and Command in promoting our program on a regular basis to our membership, our Veterans, and to the families of Veterans throughout Ontario Command. So, my sincere thanks and appreciation to each and every-one involved for the dedication and assistance you give towards the success of our very important and special program. Keep up the good work! Some special thanks as well to our hard-working coordinators, Carolyn McCaul and Mary Ann Goheen. Their dedication towards our program has been outstanding. Also, special thanks for all of the support we have received from our staff at Ontario Command, our President, Sharon McKeown and all of my fellow Senior Elected Officers of Ontario Command. I also wish to thank our publisher Fenety Marketing and all of their staff for all of their support, cooperation and understanding in making our first five books so successful. It is only through everyone’s efforts that we will continue to be successful in telling the story about our Veterans in communities across Ontario. It has been both a privilege and an honour to have been the Chairman of this great Veterans program for the past five years. 13 www.on.legion.ca The Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU) honours all those who have served in the military to defend our Canadian rights, freedoms, and values. Democracy comes at a fearsome cost. Whenever called to defend it, Canadians have willingly paid the price, whether on the battlefields of Europe, Korea, and Afghanistan, or in the tense border areas of the globe. Those who serve show us, in the most vivid way, that preserving our values means standing up for those values. That is what our union has been doing for over a century, first as the Ontario Civil Service Association, and now as OPSEU. We are dedicated to fostering a just and caring society. The spirit of altruism that inspired so many to offer their lives for others inspires us today. We give thanks to all those who gave so much of themselves for the good of so many others. We honour those who serve
